Watching season 1, we get some idea about John, not particularly well liked with other hunters, including Bobby. Quite military in his way, and he admits he stopped being a father and as more of a drill sargent with his boys. However we see that he is also a broken man, and he does care from his sons.

Yeah I agree, that was the read I got early on and not much challenged that idea of him later on. He knew the boys would be in the business so prepared them as best he was capable of. He definitely had a bit of a wall up between him and them, perhaps protective for both sides when the inevitable deaths happened.

Sam was too young to have known what he was before Mary died and Dean understood the damage Mary's death caused John. Maybe another reason Dean pined so hard for his Mum, remembering those family bonds and times and what John was before before being that badly broken.

I think one of the more powerful lines from John is him saying that he wanted Sam to go to school, he wanted Dean to have a home. He's acknowledging that, since Mary died, Dean never had a place to call home like Sam found at the school.
