So, from a few people I've heard complaints that SPN is a bit "dry" of female characters, and if they're there they get killed pretty quickly...

However, I've always felt like it's one of the shows that have the best developed female characters, no matter how brief their appearances are it feels as though they're all... people. There are no "Anya's" if you get my drift.

Jo, Ellen, Meg, Ruby, Mary, Pamela Barnes, Jody, Bela, Cassie, Charlie... etc etc. the list goes on.

Do you feel like there's a shortage of women on the show, or that women are mistreated by it? Is it an all boys club and nothing more?

Yes. No. Yes. I think the female characters are good, (for the most part) fully developed characters even if they are short-lived.

No, No, No. lol

I don't think they need to have women or "romance" on the show just to have women and romance on the show. This is a show about two brothers: there are other people that come into contact with the two main characters but at its heart it is about Sam & Dean. I would say that other characters male and female don't stick around long, and I think that's a good thing and by design. The female characters are certainly well done (not just token characters, or Dean's conquests or what have you) and they serve a purpose in the story. No one would watch Cagney & Lacey (*pause for Gabriel joke here*) and ask if there should be more men on the show or if the men are mistreated lol

If the show gets away from what it is at it's core, then it will lose what makes it special.

No, not really.

I think that the only female character that you could say was one dimensional would be Jessica. She was pretty, she loved Sam, she died - That's the only things about her that stick out at me. I cant really think of anything defining about her personality.

The show is an equal opportunity murderer ;). They kill off just as many guys as girls.

Maybe I misread... where did it say anything about romance? I don't want romance, jut more women... or more recurring women. That's why Charlie was so great.

First Girl & Girl show I think of is Laverne and Shirley. They were the original C&L.

I have heard this around too. I really am a fan of it being based around the boys.

I enjoy the network dynamics they had set up, with "aunty" type Ellen, Pamela etc. Since people keep dying, I tend to pay a little more attention to their stories, as I always suspect they will not be around in the longer term (bar ghost/heaven, but how many times  ).

They teased me with Charlie! I thought she was going to get a happily ever after :(

I am excited to see what happens with Amara.

I loved the females on supernatural, I think they get great storylines. Yes they get killed but so do most of the other characters on the show. To me the show is about the two brothers and the people that come into their lives, Sam and Dean lead dangerous lives and people do get killed along the way.

Some characters have stayed around a while, Jody, Donna, Claire, Alex, Krissy are all still alive, on the male side we only really have the ghostfacers that have survived. All the other males are non human.

I concur with others above - the show is centered around two brothers; they are the mainstays. Everyone else comes and goes or gets killed off, male or female. I think there is a predominantly male presence just because that's who Sam and Dean grew up around. Then you had the Ellens and such, but because men were who Sam and Dean were around, that's who shows up. I feel like both male and female characters are treated the same regardless.

I had a male friend mention this to be the other day, how he thought the show was sexist because of the treatment of females and how it is a male dominated show.

It always was going to be male dominated because the leads are brothers and it's inspired by the Bible which is also male dominated!

I do think the females on this show are lacking compared to the male characters. I don't have a problem with it being male dominated but I'd rather there were no recurring female characters than ones that just feel shallow to me.
To put it one way I've watched 14 seasons and the only female character I care about deeply is Jody. Some of the others are good like Rowena and Ellen/Jo but they're few and far between.
